Choosing Equipment for Quarry Operations

The equipment a quarry needs — excavators, wheel loaders, crushers, screens, and conveyors — sized to your rock and output.

A quarry is a system. Every machine — from the face to the stockpile — must be sized to keep rock moving at the right rate.

At the face: excavators and wheel loaders

  • Excavators — load the primary crusher and handle oversize. Match the excavator bucket to the crusher feed opening.
  • Wheel loaders — move shot rock to the crusher, stockpile finished product, and load customer trucks. A mid-size quarry often uses both: an excavator at the crusher and a loader for stockpile and truck loading.

Primary crushing: jaw crusher

The jaw crusher takes shot rock from the face and reduces it for the secondary stage. Size the feed opening to your blast pattern and the capacity to your daily tonnes.

Secondary and tertiary: cone crushers and screens

A cone crusher produces the final aggregate sizes. Screens separate the output into fractions — for concrete, asphalt, road base, and dust. Return oversize to the cone for re-crushing.

Material handling: conveyors and stackers

Conveyors move rock between stages and to stockpiles. A well-designed conveyor system reduces loader cycles and keeps the plant running. Mobile and tracked conveyors suit quarries that move the plant as the face advances.

Mobile vs stationary

  • Mobile plants — track-mounted crushers and screens. Move with the face, fast setup, ideal for contractors and quarries with multiple benches.
  • Stationary plants — fixed installations for high-throughput quarries running in one place for years.
